Product Description
Pershing began his career as a school teacher. Early on he was inspired to join the military academy at West Point where in his last year he was appointed the Captain of the Corps of Cadets. He participated in military campaigns in Mexico and Cuba which gave him valuable experience for the great challenge to come. Most noteworthy was the decoration he earned at the charge of San Juan Hill as an officer with the black troops of the 10th US Cavalry. Throughout his career, Pershing was a strong advocate for getting colored troops into full military service including combat. His nickname relates to these endeavors.
During the First World War, General Pershing was the commander of the American Expeditionary Force (AEF) in Europe. After the war he was promoted to General of the armies, a position previously held only by George Washington. One of his final achievements was winning the pulitzer prize for history with the book 'My Experiences in the World War' published in 1932.
