As WWI stagnated into immobile trench warfare where massive frontal assaults accomplished only killing thousands, the Germans developed special "Sturm" assault battalions.
These Sturm battalions were made of specialized infantry, light artillery and engineers whose task it was to launch highly concentrated shock assaults on a narrow front to stun the enemy into retreat.
As surprise was key to a shock assault, this trooper has applied camoflage paint to his M1916 helmet. The remainder of his gear is basic WWI, the Mauser M1898 the forerunner of the WWII MAUSER K98.
